WHAT IS Psychotherapy?

In Quebec, as of June 2013, the title of psychotherapist has become a protected title. That means that the practice of psychotherapy is reserved only for those professionals holding a psychotherapy permit given by the OPQ (l’Ordre de Psychologues du Quebec).

Professionals holding this permit meet the criteria in terms of training and education, supervision and experience deemed necessary by the OPQ to deliver psychotherapy treatment. Now only a professional recognized and licensed by the OPQ (Psychologist, psychotherapist, or medical doctor) is allowed to treat certain conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, etc. with psychotherapy.

For more information, please consult the OPQ website.

How does the assessment process work?

The process of an assessment depends on the type of evaluation and the age of the client. Here is what the typical assessment process looks like:

  • We start with an intake session of 50 minutes with parents and the client (depending on the age of the client).
  • There are 4-8 assessment sessions that are each 50 minutes long, depending on the assessment. The sessions can be done as close together or as spaced out depending on your availability (max 1 session per day). Sessions must take place during the daytime (typical school/workday from 9am to after lunch) but can also be done on the weekend.
  • Questionnaires are sent out to parents, teachers, and depending on the age of the client, self-report questionnaires may also be completed.
  • For younger children, a school or daycare observation may be necessary to see their behaviour in their learning setting.
  • Feedback session with parents and the client (depending on the age of the client)
  • After the feedback session, you’ll receive a comprehensive report including the results of the assessment and recommendations for helping your child reach their full potential. This report can be shared with the school and doctors.
